The trick is looking past the hype... and STILL enjoying the hobby!

Actually, that is a very fair, thoughtful, and well-stated assessment. No mythological creatures were harmed in that post--at least the non-watchmaking variety.
Bonus points for "CNC machines aren't cute elves in liederhosen." I can just see the folks at Rolex maniacally running around with elf ears on outfitting their CNC machines with liederhosen.

Well, now we know!
I do see a touch of irony here, R. You're the guy who hates the whole "collector" market and mentality. Yet, it's really only 'collectors' who care a whit about this stuff, whether it's made in Switzerland or Ouagadougou.
Hey, as long as it's got Rolex on the dial, and the nice professional sales person behind the counter at Tourneau, Shreeve, Bucherer, etc, says it's real. Well, they'll buy it.
All the rest they'll simply write off as internet rumors and drivel.
(I see this thread getting rather long, soon).

Funny, my first introduction into this entire thing was my first SWISS watch, a Hamilton Chronomatic II. Wonderful timepiece. I opened the case, just to have a peek... "CASE MADE IN HONG KONG" was stamped therein.
I was shocked for about... well, as long as I was shocked to find Whitney Houston died with Cocaine in her system. Ooh, sorry, low hanging fruit there.
Yeah, funny how many are wearing blinders to the global economy.

Yep, neither hype nor money will get you there. It's about what rocks your boat !

But I'm not biting.
Mostly because I can't close my jaw (yes, that is Brian's fault).

If I remember correctly, TAG Heuer's Cal. 1887 is off a Seiko design for its column-wheel 6S37 automatic chronograph. No wonder they're sourcing Seiko parts for it.
ETA and Swatch Group will one day regret killing their ebauche business. Seiko, Citizen, and the Chinese are going to take over the world of mechanical timepieces. The Tianjin Sea-Gull "1963" I have has a movement made on the tooling for the old Venus 175 and it's so much like one of those old Swiss chronos of the 1950s it freaks me out. It is nearly like buying a Chronographe Suisse from about 1960. For the price you'd have paid in 1960.
