  • Rado Holland (and Private Label watches)

Here's the Holland diver I got on Ebay a few weeks ago

    <a href="http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v228/kenlum/?action=view&current=radoholland.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v228/kenlum/radoholland.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Case ref is 11683, the same as the Rado Captain Cook Mk 1. But no serial numbers on the lug ends as the CC Mk1. Exactly the same case. The same crown also, but not signed. Bezel is bi-directional and does not click. 38 mm across excluding crown

Same hands as CC Mk1, but missing seconds hand. The dial is the same design except it is missing the rotating anchor. Original signage "Holland" and "automatic." Dial has not been refinished. It is a very dark charcoal colour.

    <a href="http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v228/kenlum/?action=view&current=radohollandback.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v228/kenlum/radohollandback.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

(Moderator's Edit--screen capture added in lieu of photbucket failure):

The back is exactly the same as the Rado CC Mk1 and signed Rado Water Sealed with the same patent numbers and case ref 11683.

    <a href="http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v228/kenlum/?action=view&current=radohollandmovement.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v228/kenlum/radohollandmovement.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

    <a href="http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v228/kenlum/?action=view&current=radohollandmovement2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v228/kenlum/radohollandmovement2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Movement is an A Schild AS 1700/01 17 jewels signed Holland Watch Co.

So, a puzzle. Anyone heard of the Holland Watch Co?
I bought this mainly for parts, but I think I'll keep it as is. It looks totally original, other than the hands being re-lumed. Pretty good nick also.

    Cheers,
    ken

I'm so sick and tired of my friends who can't handle their alcohol. The other night they dropped me three times while carrying me to the car

I certainly did not expect the movement to be signed HWC. I suppose we'll need to find out whether Holland was a brand owned by Schlup or perhaps a marketing/retail firm with a partnership with Rado.

    Well bought, Ken.

      Hi!

Holland isnīt a registered trademark in Switzerland and Europe, I donīt think there is a connection to Schlup or Rado. I just found a ladiesī watch in the US-bay from the Holland Watch Co. - maybe a private label with watches from different watch producers? Also possible that the dial/movement-combination is from another watch and fitted into the CC Mk I-case.
      Best regards, Mike

        Holland Mystery cleared!

        Hi!

Stumbled over this thread at WUS:
"Holland Watch Company was a brand marketed by Friedman's Jewelers. Friedman's used to have several locations in Augusta, GA. and I believe elsewhere. I'm not sure if the company still exists. They also marketed a Jacques Prevard watch which was considered a higher end model than Holland. Both lines used quality components. "
        Wiki: Friedmanīs Inc.
So they sold Rados labeled with their own name, like we assumed.
        Best regards, Mike

Another possible Private Label variant of Rado (originally noted by Jose):
