I’ve been thinking about picking up a pilot’s watch, having owned a few in the past. Mostly, I was looking at chronographs, and was going back and forth between high-end (IWC) and something more reasonable (like an Archimede or Fortis). In the process of looking at pilots, I did briefly look at the IWC Mark XVII, but wasn’t prepared to drop $3k plus on it.

I found an Archimede a few weeks ago at a very reasonable price, and it was pretty much what I was looking for in a pilot watch. Good size at 42mm, nice legibility….couldn’t really justify spending $4k on an IWC 3717 when the Archimede is more or less the same watch (I know… that can be said for lots of watches, but in this case they were just too close for me).

So here’s where I get impulsive (and stupid):

I should have been happy with my $650 Archimede….but then I came across an IWC Mark XVII for a relatively low price. No box and papers, but a trusted seller. And before I knew it, I made an offer and paid for ANOTHER pilot watch I didn’t really need.

It arrived yesterday, and as soon as I handled it, I thought it was a little off. The hands seemed a little unfinished, and under a loop, I found a couple of very small defects on the dial. Plus, the date wheel seemed really faint….It’s getting harder for me to see small print, but this was REALLY hard to read.

So I started comparing it to other pictures of Mark XVIIs, and within 15 minutes I discovered that the date font is totally wrong. Then I found a couple for replica sites that had the same watch, same date font, and the first two and last two digits of my new watch’s serial number (the rest was obscured by a watermark).

I paid through paypal, so new I would be protected if push came to shove, but sent a very nice note explaining what I found to the seller. After I sent the photos comparing authentic to the replica, he immediately refunded my money.

What scared the BLEEP out of me were the pictures of replicas I found where there was NO difference. If you are very familiar with a watch brand, you may be able to pick out a replica immediately. Otherwise, it may be impossible to tell, and in this case, the only reason I even looked for more info was because I examined it under magnification.

This is the first time this has happened to me, but I wanted to share the story, just so folks were aware of what’s out there. I’ve read stories about issues in the past, but have never been through something like this. Thankfully the seller was a good guy about it – he had no idea, and said a jeweler had just appraised it, so was really surprised.

I’d post this on TZ and WUS as well, but I know they’d delete it since it has the word “replica” in it….be careful out there!

p.s. - Here's picture of my archimdede :)
Apologies for the cell phone pic. No apologies for the Garcia Syndrome. The watch arrived ticking within a second or tow of my Hyperchrome chronometer.

Adjusted for timing, checked for Waterproofing, new bracelet, new internal bezel, new bezel, new crown, new hands and shipping. Total cost to yours truly- $0.00. Thank you SwatchGroup. I am also very happy that the original caseback was undamaged and salvaged.

Interesting thing- I am going to have to check my leftover old bracelet links with a micrometer, but the new bracelet looks the tiniest bit different. I wonder if mine wasn't the first failure?
