I suspect most folks we know who are watch fanatics now got started by acquiring
older, less expensive pieces. I was lucky enough to be given many watches from
various family members, but none were so impressive upon me as my
grandfather's Accutron:

Having served as president of his Elks' Lodge, he was given this the year I was
born, and it was given to me in the early 1990s after my grandfather died. I
distinctly recall sitting on his knee as a child and hearing him ask rhetorically "Isn't
this a good looking watch?"

All I could do was agree.

Hey all you visitors to this new forum, show us the vintage pieces that
helped you develop a taste for watch colelcting!

..and Elgin. I got started on pocketwatches, picking up the Big Elgin. This guy is a cheap 7 jewel bomb from the late 1860's. I haven't got a good shot of it, yet.
